I've been tutoring for the past two years due to the fact that I took up full-time studying. Prior to that I did part-time Remedial Intervention with 'at risk youths' in a voilatile community which aptly prepared me for my dos' and dont's' re: this avenue of expertise as I choose to put it. I've realized that many parents aren't really cognizant of what the concept of a 'tutor' is or it's importance... Your child has to be a part of the decision making process... His or her input is relevant as it will not materialize as anything meaningful if he or she has a "clash" where personalities are concerned between him/her and the tutor... Here the parent also needs to establish certain rules among themselves and the tutor as well as the child. It is best viewed by me as a contract which involves all parties involved.
I. My first point will have to be the highlight of "Why do I need a tutor?" As a parent, it is no easy decision to make as to why your child needs a tutor. This decision has to be based on your observation of your child's strengths and weaknesses. A selection of an individual who is best suited to meet and enhance your child's individual capabilities.
II. Communication - I cannot emphasize the importance of communication in this contract... It is of paramount importance that you inform the tutor of exactly what your goals are and or intentions are for your child, and you MUST stick to this objective. Anything otherwise will just be mere CONFUSION for all involved. If your child needs a little "catching -up" one-on-one sessions can be arranged with many educators as well as after school sessions are still performed. If this is what you really need tutoring may not be the best option for your child.
III. Selection of the Ideal person is of course no easy task and is the by far one of the hardest aspect of the decision making process. Many individual's advertise their services and they are either trained educators or individuals who have garnered expertise after years of practice in the field. It is NEVER an easy task to select someone but screening via interviews is always effective. Referrals from reputable individuals is also an avenue that has been tested and proven to be an ideal and effective strategy to select tutors...
IV. Transportation It is NEVER a hard and fast RULE to go to the tutor or have the tutor come by you... I'm presently unable to invite client where I live so the BEST option for me NOW is going to their place. I also now have no mode of personal transport so I do resort to those which are offered by the public and will meet the parent (on time)who offers to meet the client who offers to pick me up to drop me off at their location.
